Kingston Technology 64GB SDCAC & SDCA3 UHS-I microSDXC Cards & MobileLite G4 USB 3.0 Card Reader Review @ ModSynergy.com
By: Michael Phrakaysone

Within the last year we've reviewed a couple of Quadcopter Drones on the market.  The drone market is booming right now and is going to be huge in 2017.  Just look at the recent 2017 NFL Super Bowl 51 halftime show that included 500 Intel Shooting Star drones in beautiful sequence to make a light show in the sky.  We've also completed our fair share of Action Camera reviews as well.  These two are related to each other because there are drones on the market that can carry these action cameras.  We're at the place in time where 4K resolution is dominating the marketplace and there are aerial video drones on the market right now such as the DJI Phantom , Yuneec Typhoon 4K, and GoPro Karma that have 4K cameras attached to them.  These cameras are capable of up between 50-100 Mbps bitrate.

What some don't realize is when you purchase the camera drone, you also have to purchase the correct memory card, or else you may run into problems such as the camera not being able to record in 4K high resolution, the camera recording only for a few seconds and then stopping on its own, you experience dropped frames, or the camera will simply freeze under operation.  Why this happens is that the performance of the memory card is not quick enough to handle continuous 4K recording.  To be more specific, the memory card used must be able to have a sustained write speed of at least 30MB/s, for which the U3 Speed Class 3 designation calls for having as guaranteed write speed minimum, or else the camera will stop recording.  Read speed in this case does not matter as much as write speeds do, and read speeds are most often than not, faster than the write speed on a memory card.

Today we'll look at three drone camera accessories you may consider from Kingston Technology when purchasing a 4K camera capable drone.  We will be taking a quick look at the 64GB Kingston Technology SDCAC 90MB/s (Read) & 45MB/s (Write) UHS-I U3 SDXC, the 64GB Kingston Technology SDCA3  90MB/s (Read) &  90MB/s (Write) UHS-I U3 SDXC, and the Kingston Technology MobileLite G4 USB 3.0 Card Reader you can use to transfer video from both of these memory cards to your PC or MAC.

Our Quick Take

MobileLite G4METAL ALLOYKingston MobileLite G4

The Kingston MobileLite G4 USB 3.0 Card Reader has a nice compact sleek look to it.  The unit color is two tone champagne and black measuring 52mm x 33mm x 9mm or 2.04" x 1.29" x 0.35".  On a digital scale the MobileLite G4 weighs only 17 grams/0.58 oz/0.037 Lb.  The card reader is constructed mostly of metal alloy with some plastic honeycomb design at the edge of the unit.  You can feel the metal construction is cool to the touch when held in the hands giving the MobileLite G4 a premium feel.  The MobileLite G4 is able to accept both smaller microSD cards and larger regular SD card variants.  The honeycomb design has dedicated labels for which side is meant for microSD and SD cards.  The Kingston MobileLite G4  supports SD/SDHC/SDXC, UHS-I, UHS-II, microSD/microSDHC/microSDXC, UHS-I memory cards.

After an extended period of testing, the MobileLite G4 was only lukewarm to the touch, 27 degrees Celsius according to my IR thermometer, suggesting the metal alloy construction acts as a heatsink dissipating the heat away from the card reader.

USB 3.0 Connector

The only thing I feel should have been included in the Kingston MobileLite G4 package is a USB 3.0 extension cable, because being slightly wider than a regular size SD card, the MobileLite G4 is wide enough to block the next USB port.

Kingston Technology MobileLite G4

The other minor annoyance I would have with the Kingston MobileLite G4 USB 3.0 card reader is that there's no LED activity light.  I would have fancied the Kingston logo to have been illuminated.

Performance wise, the Kingston MobileLite G4 USB 3.0 card reader provided the fastest write speeds compared to a generic USB 3.0 card reader I had for comparison purposes.  It also provided more consistent results.  The read speed performance was slightly slower, but the write speeds were much faster and consistent, a compromise I'd gladly accept.  And yes both microSD and regular SD can be used at the same time on the MobileLite G4.

The best part of the Kingston MobileLite G4 USB 3.0 card reader is definitely the dirt cheap price.  It sells on B&H Photo Video for only $8.95 USD and Amazon USA for $11.60 USD.  Canadians can grab the G4 for $11.75 through DirectCanada, $12.99 at Canada Computers, and $14.97 from NCIX Canada.

Conclusion

Inexpensive, fast performance, and portable, I don't see much wrong with the Kingston MobileLite G4 USB 3.0 card reader.  It comes in a mostly metal alloy body, can take both microSD and regular SD cards, runs lukewarm to the touch, looks and feels premium, I don't think you would be able to find much better for the price.  It gives greater write speed performance than a generic USB 3.0 card reader I had been comparing to and the MobileLite G4 gave more consistent results across the board.  I saw no issues during my testing.   The Kingston MobileLite G4 USB 3.0 card reader earns top honors in our Editor's Choice award rating!

Our Quick Take

UHS-I U3Kingston SDCAC

The Kingston Technology SDCA3 is an UHS-I U3 microSD card that offers a rated performance of 90MB/s read and 80MB/s write.  This particular model does not come with a microSD to SD card adapter.  The card itself is standard black with red text and a red strip at the very bottom.  If this ever falls on the ground it may be hard to spot being black, but the red text should at least help a little in making it easier to find.

We'll see if the 64GB Kingston Technology SDCA3 is able to meet its advertised performance claim of 90MB/s read and 80MB/s write.

Let us remember that the model that was reviewed above, the Kingston SDCAC has an advertised performance claim of 90MB/s read and 45MB/s write.  This SDCA3 version, on paper, should be around 35MB/s faster on its write performance.

Let us also be reminded that the U3 Speed Class 3 designation calls for a guaranteed write speed minimum of at least 30MB/s.  The Kingston Technology SDCA3 goes beyond that with an advertised write speed of 80MB/s.

Conclusion

The Kingston Technology SDCA3/64GBSP at the very least meets the UHS-I U3 Speed Class 3 standard.  In terms of meeting its advertised 90MB/s read and 80MB/s write, the SDCA3/64GBSP failed to reach this in the tests I conducted.  Interesting to note that the marketing material does mention "up to" in referring to its performance claims.  I would say the SDCA3 underachieved, while the SDCAC variant reviewed above overachieved.

In the ATTO Disk Benchmark tests the SDCA3 nets a best of 98MB/s read and 70.8MB/s write.

In the Blackmagic Design Disk Speed Test, the SDCA3 achieved a read speed of 93.3MB/s and a write speed of 77.6MB/s putting it close to its advertised 80MB/s write speed performance rating.

In the CrystalDiskMark benchmark the SDCA3 achieved a sequential read speed of 97.62MB/s and  sequential write speed of 37.63MB/s.  It should be noted that using the SDCA3 around Windows doing normal file transfers, the performance was more in line with what is seen in the CrystalDiskMark benchmark.

The Kingston Technology SDCA3 meets the rated manufacturer claim of 90MB/s read, but unfortunately comes up short to its rated manufacturer claim of 80MB/s write.  It achieved 70.8MB/s write in the ATTO Disk Benchmark, 77.6MB/s write in the Blackmagic Design Disk Speed Test, and  37.63MB/s write in the CrystalDiskMark Benchmark.  At the end of the day, the SDCA3 does conform to the UHS-I U3 standard.

You can purchase the 64GB Kingston Technology SDCA3 (Black/Red) right now for $35.29USD on Amazon.com.

Between the Kingston SDCA3 (Black/Red) and SDCAC (White/Blue) versions tested in this review, the difference in price is $0.54.  In terms of performance, the Kingston SDCA3 (Black/Red) is only slightly  faster than the SDCAC (White/Blue), but I was more impressed with the SDCAC (White/Blue) because it went above and beyond its rated manufacturer claim of 90MB/s read and 45MB/s in a big way, whereas the SDCA3 (Black/Red) failed (in terms of write performance) to meet its rated manufacturer claim of 90MB/s read and 80MB/s write.  Either way performance between the two cards are similar enough that you won't go wrong choosing either one for your Action Camera and or Quadcopter Drone camera.
