Ableconn PEXM2-SSD M.2 NGFF PCIe SSD to PCI Express 3.0 x4 Host Adapter Card Review @ ModSynergy.com
We’ve reviewed our fair share of solid-state drives (SSD) over the years. SSD’s are the superfast storage medium that one can purchase over conventional and slower, spinning hard disk drives for their computers. I consider these SSD’s to be the single greatest upgrade one can make to give their aging and current computers an extra lease on life.
Over the years ModSynergy have reviewed many SATA based SSD’s ranging from SATA I (1.5Gbps), SATA II (3Gbps), and SATA III (6Gbps). There comes a time when a particular interface is maxed out, and that precisely the case with SATA. SSD performance has hit a wall in performance with the SATA interface having no more room to grow, hence why the industry has moved on to M.2.
The latest M.2 SSDs utilize the PCIE lanes in your motherboard to perform at greater speeds than SATA was ever capable of achieving, and the physical size is significantly smaller than the 2.5” SATA SSDs they are quickly replacing, having common sizes ranging from 22mm x 80mm, 22mm x 60mm and 22mm x 42mm.
For those of you who want to make use of the latest and fastest M.2 SSDs in a machine without an existing M.2 slot, this review is for you. The Ableconn PEXM2-SSD M.2 adapter that is being reviewed today can be purchased for $19.99 USD allowing you to make use of a single PCIE slot on your motherboard that will transform your system.

Ableconn PEXM2-SSD M.2 to PCI Express 3.0 x4 Host Adapter Card Specifications
The Ableconn PEXM2-SSD comes in a cheerfully designed and eco-friendly packaging utilizing paper instead of plastic, making recycling easier than plastic. We live in a plastic world, with enormous amounts of plastic filling our landfills, and since there are many variations of plastic, not all of them are even processed at local recycling facilities. Paper having one variation is always going to be easier to recycle.
The front of the box showcases the PEXM2-SSD adapter card along with different supported features.
One thing to note with these adapters, if they are going into an older system, they may not take full advantage of the PCIE bus if an existing PCIE device already occupies and uses the existing lanes, and or if the motherboard already has a limited number of PCIE lanes it supports. Even if the performance is half, the M.2 SSD still outperforms any SATA based SSD.
Performance Testing & Results
The goal here is to simply verify if the PEXM2-SSD adapter card works and nothing more.
Since it’s going in an older system, we’re not going to verify if the performance is max or not. We were able to achieve read speeds of up to 1.57 GB/s and write speeds up to 1.49 GB/s. This blows away any previous SATA based SSD we have ever reviewed.
I will not mention what M.2 SSD is being used and will blur out the names in the photos you see in this review. I’ll do a full review of this M.2 SSD in the future.
What Problem You Might Encounter (Running Windows 7)
If you’re sticking this Ableconn PEXM2-SSD adapter into a machine running Windows 7 and find it’s not being recognized, that’s because Windows 7 does not contain built-in NVMe drivers…anything post Windows 7 has native support for NVMe so you won’t encounter these problems.
Where Can I Buy One? For How Much?
The Ableconn PEXM2-SSD M.2 to PCI Express 3.0 x4 Host Adapter Card can be purchased on Amazon USA for $19.99. If you prefer to shop on Amazon like I do, then the PEXM2-SSD is going to be Fulfilled by Amazon and not through a third party. This makes the purchase safer in terms of getting what you paid for and this way you can have Amazon's protection.
Why do I like Amazon? They are fast, honest, reliable, and their return policy is great. I actually got money refunded back to my account (twice) after Amazon initially overcharged me on duty costs. Talk about being an honest company. Most others would keep the money and not say anything!
